Knocking In & Care Information
Knocking In:
Six Cricket bats are handcrafted from English Willow (Salix Ceraelea) which is a natural timber fibre. English Willow requires preparation before it can be used to strike a cricket ball. This preparation process is called ‘Knocking In’.
All cricket bats require careful preparation to ensure match readiness, durability and drive power. Our bats are delivered ‘factory’ knocked in, which involves mechanical pressing of the bat guided by a bat maker. This process provides a degree of conditioning, however further at-home preparation (minimum of SIX hours) is essential to reaching optimal results.
Please follow these steps carefully to knock in your new Six Cricket bat:
Use a specific bat mallet or an old, quality cricket ball (do not use a new ball) to repeatedly strike the bat in all likely spots that the bat could be expected to be hit with a ball in a match or training scenario.
Continue to strike the bat with gradually increasing force for a minimum of six (6) hours. Failure to adequately prepare the bat for a prolonged period will result in damage and unpreparedness of the bat.
Ensure to prepare the edges of the bat, although take care to not strike the edge or toe of the bat directly on right-angles to the blade, as this will likely incur damage to the bat and is inconsistent with likely strike zones in a match or training scenario. Do not hit the back of the bat as this will result in damage and will void warranty.
Once six (6) hours of knocking in has completed, the bat can be used to hit short catches with an old, quality cricket ball. If the seam of the ball marks the blade, it is essential to continue knocking in the bat with the bat mallet or old ball for a further one (1) hour to continue conditioning the bat.
Your Six Cricket bat should now be ready for use in the nets against an old, soft cricket ball. It is recommended at this stage to avoid fast bowling and instead prepare the bat in a defensive manner. Again, if the seam of the ball marks the face of the bat at this stage please return to the initial knocking in process.
Your Six Cricket bat will be delivered fitted with a plain face ExtraTech film and fibreglass tape on the edges of the bat to offer additional protection from surface cracking. These protective films do not negate the requirement to knock in the bat but may support the durability and minimise surface damage. It will not entirely prevent surface damage. It is almost certain that over the lifespan of your cricket bat it will incur surface cracks due to the natural fibres of the Willow being struck repeatedly by a fast moving, solid object.
Return claims for cracked or damaged bats due to failure to knock in as recommended will not be accepted.
Under no circumstances should a bat be used in match conditions before the recommended steps have been completed, including at least six (6) hours of knocking in.
Storage:
We recommend storing your Six Cricket bat in the provided bat case inside your cricket kit bag. Ideally, this bag should be stored in a cool, dry area (garage, shed or room unlikely to contain moisture).
Your Six Cricket bat is fitted with face ExtraTech film and fibreglass tape on the edges of the bat.
If these protective films are removed, other maintenance (oiling) may be necessary.
